National Museum

Royal Barge Museum
          The Royal Barge Museum houses the fantastic Royal Barges which are used in ceremonial processions on the river. The museum is located on Bangkok Noi canal.

Vimanmek Teak Mansion
          Mansion built of golden teak in 1868 and moved to present site in 1910. Former residence of King Rama V, comprised of 81 rooms with imposing staircases, octagonal rooms and lattice walls. There contains many antiques and art objects as well as personal effects of King Rama V

Suan Pakkard Palace
          Complex of historic homes relocated from Chiang Mai and once used by members of the royal family. Set on beautifully landscaped grounds. Impressive 450 year old "Laquer Pavilion" relocated from Ayuthaya, decorated with gold leaf murals depicting the Buddha's life.

Jim Thompson's House
          Legendary American who rejuvenated Thailand's silk industry, developed compound of six traditional Thai teak houses which are filled with a priceless collection of Asian antiques including carvings, paintings, decorative items and etc. The oldest house dates to 1800.

Siam Society
          Home of a respected research library and the Khamtieng House, a century old residence relocated from Chiang Mai. Artifacts and hill tribe costumes are on display. Society publications are sale at headquarters building.

Wat Pho / Wat Phrachetuphon
          Wat Pho or Wat Phrachetuphon is Bangkok's largest and oldest temple. Featuring Thailand's largest reclining Buddha (46m). Rebuilt in the 1780's, this temple is also noted for massage school and traditional medicine center. Main temple houses Buddha image salvaged from Ayutthaya.

Wat Saket and Golden Mount

 

          One of Bangkok's oldest temples built by King Rama l. Within the grounds is Golden Mount a 76m (250ft) high hill capped by a golden tower, providing great views of old Bangkok.

Wat Arun / Temple of Dawn
          One of the early homes of the Emerald Buddha featuring Khmer style prangs constructed during the reigns of Rama I and II. Main prang is 67m (220ft) tall and 234m (768ft) around at the base. There ornamented with broken porcelain which was added by King Mongkut (Rama IV) unique riverside setting.

Wat Phra Keao / The Grand Palace
          Begun in 1782, this Temple houses the sacred Emerald uddha.The temple compound contains many notable buildings,pagodas,prangs and mural galleries. Doors and windows of main chapel delicately inlaid with mother of pearl. Adjacent Grand Palace buildings include both classic Thai and Western influenced designs and consists of throne halls, pavilions and buildings used for various ceremonial purposes.and extensive collection of arms available for viewing.

Wat Suthat
          The temple construction begun in 1807 by Rama I, but not completed till reign of Rama Vll. There contains largest Viharn in Thailand. Fine Sukhothai style Buddha image, murals and carved teak doors. King Rama Vll's ashes contained under main Buddha image. From Grand Palace, take public transport. taxi or Tuk-Tuk down Kanlayanamit Rd. to Wat Suthat, adjacent to the Giant Swing on right.
